Boys and Girls Club logo

Congratulations to the Intrepid Keystone Club at the Boys and Girls Club of Woburn! They were the only group from Massachusetts to receive the UnitedHealth HEROES grant for $955 to help fight childhood obesity in the community.

The UnitedHealth HEROES grant is a joint effort with Youth Service America (YSA), a national nonprofit. This grant is awarded to a youth-led program that includes an activity component, in which kids can count their steps, and a service component that increases awareness, provides direct service, enables advocacy on behalf of a cause or features youth philanthropy around the issue of childhood obesity.

The Keystone Club will use this grant to host weekly challenges at the Boys and Girls Club such as running laps, walking or jumping rope. Members of the group will chart the progress made by participants and everyone who participates will earn prizes and incentives. The goal of this program is to educate young people in Woburn about the importance of active, healthy living, while providing them with opportunities to be active in their daily lives.

During the program, the Keystone Club will present facts and tips on how to stay healthy and active. The Keystone Club will showcase their achievements at a health fair on Global Youth Serivce Day on April 26th. They will also be hosting a relay race that will feature a compliation of all the challenges in which members participated in over the course of the program.

The Woburn Youth Council at the Boys and Girls Club of Woburn is a youth group (ages 12-18) committed to doing service learning projects in the Woburn community. Two AmeriCorps members from Social Capital Inc., Yekaterina Filippova and Ashley Napear, have been advising the Youth Council as they embark on numerous service learning projects throughout the year.

The mini-grants that the Youth Council will be giving away to youth-based community service learning projects is one of their many initiatives. The Youth Council is encouraging groups of youth to apply for one of their mini-grants of $100-$250 to help them implement a service learning project in their community.

To apply, youth should fill out the application attached below. The grant application process is an opportunity for youth to learn about the grant-writing process and financial opportunities for service learning projects. An adult may act in an advisory role to facilitate this process, but the youth should be responsible for coming up with the project idea and completing the application.

The applications are due by February 4th either by mail, electronically or in-person drop off. You can mail them to:
