In an economic recession, it can be difficult to find employment, especially for teens and young adults who face the highest rates of unemployment for their age group since the Great Depression.

Luckily, there is a great online community resource available to help improve this situation. Not only does it share information about local jobs and volunteer opportunities, but it also connects neighbors to each other.

HelpAroundTown.com allows users to create free profiles. Employers can post job opportunities that they need help with and employees can search for local jobs near where they live.

This online community allows employees to build credibility as they can be rated for their performance as well as receive recommendations from others. There is also a bulletin board where advertisements for various things can be posted (a free service for nonprofits!)

Christmas Tree

It is better to give, than to receive! As you do your holiday shopping this year, try not to forget that some families struggle to provide holiday gifts for their families.

Devereux, a private, non-profit agency that serves young people from birth to age 22, is looking for volunteers to run a gift certificate drive to help foster families have an enjoyable holiday season.

Devereux has agencies all over the country, but the agency based out of Woburn is looking for volunteers to help collect gift cards, movie passes, and restaurant certificates that will go to teenagers placed in foster homes.

The Council of Social Concern's Food Pantry is getting ready for its Annual Holiday Food Basket Distribution for families in need who reside in Woburn or Winchester. Last year, the pantry distributed over 800 Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to local families.

If you know of any families in need, please refer them to the attached flyer, so they can sign up for a Thanksgiving basket. The form also explains how to request a Christmas basket, which is being done differently this year than for the Thanksgiving basket.

There are also a number of ways individuals in the community can donate or volunteer to help with this food basket project. To learn about all of the opportunities, click here.
