Letter Writing Campaign to Troops Through Operation Gratitude

Join Woburn AmeriCorps Members as they host a service project on Monday honoring Dr. King’s legacy.

Local AmeriCorps Members are holding a letter writing campaign to those serving in the armed forces.  Community members are encouraged to stop by the YMCA on Monday to join in and spend some time writing a letter to a person serving in the military.  Through this project, AmeriCorps members hope to promote community engagement in Woburn and also do something tangible for those serving our country. The project takes place from 9-11 a.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Martin Luther King Day, at the Y (137 Lexington St., Woburn).

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day has become a day synonymous with a day of service.  The Corporation for National & Community Service advocates “A Day On, Not a Day Off!”  explaining that this is “a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community service that helps empower and strengthen local communities.”

Through service projects, such as the one planned at the North Suburban YMCA here in Woburn, community members work together to achieve common goals, strengthen relationships with each other and the area they live in, and reflect on what Dr. King’s legacy means.
