Overview of Programming Areas

SCI Woburn offers programming in the following areas. Click on the programming areas for more specific programming information:

  1. Developing Emerging Leaders: SCI focuses much of its effort on youth in order to reverse the long-term decline in civic engagement. In particular, there is a need to encourage youth to participate in the political process. The  Woburn Youth Council, coordinated by SCI in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Woburn and the North Suburban Family YMCA, trains youth to mobilize their peers to become civically engaged. Another related program in Woburn is the Woburn Civil Rights Forum.  SCI also works with adults.  We develop the leadership skills of community residents to enable them to effectively engage others in civic activities, running three year-long Leadership Woburn programs.
  2. Connecting Citizens: SCI combines the use of information technology and “old-fashioned” face-to-face contact to provide citizens with information they need to participate in civic life. The SCI Week in Woburn email provides weekly updates on community events, opportunities, and announcements. Through the SCI Civic Welcome Wagon program, volunteers provide new residents with a "Welcome to Woburn" publication.  SCI collaborates with other community groups to plan community events that bring people together. Highlights in this area include the Hidden Treasure Charitable Art Auction, the Jack Marlowe Park Summer Concert Series, our Martin Luther King Day collaboration with St. John's Baptist Church & the City of Woburn, and the Woburn Holiday House Tour.
