This past Saturday, June 21st, the second annual WorldFest Woburn! took place in Woburn Center. Over 500 residents engaged in an exciting day of culturally educating activities. More than 20 diverse vendors hosted tables with food and information from Korea, Argentina, India, China and Brazil. Several bands entertained the crowd with various native sounds from Ireland, Portugal and Japan. In addition to the enchanting music, dancers performed for the crowd. Woburn residents from various cultural backgrounds also displayed art, jewelry, and clothing.
Spurred to action by their community’s growing cultural and ethnic diversity, a coalition of Woburn groups held the first annual WorldFest Woburn! last year. While the effort was coordinated by Social Capital Inc. (SCI), a nonprofit founded in 2002 with a mission that includes uniting diverse individuals and groups in civic engagement initiatives, the first WorldFest Woburn! was largely the result of feedback from community members and other civic groups who had been expressing interest in such an event for years.
Major support for WorldFest Woburn! came from Whole Foods Market of Woburn, and Bay Path College. WorldFest Woburn! was coordinated by SCI in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Woburn, North Suburban Family YMCA, United Methodist Church of Woburn, Woburn Historical Society, Woburn Public Library, Woburn Redevelopment Authority, and WREN. WorldFest Woburn! was made possible by the Woburn Arts/Culture Initiative with Northwest Suburban Health Alliance/CHNA 15 DoN funds from Lahey Clinic.
