Woburn Reads: A Community-wide Reading Event

January 26, 2010 by Mike Cooper

Woburn Public Library SealWoburn Reads is a community-wide reading program that begins February 1, 2010 and continues through mid-April.  It’s sort of like a book club, but expanded to cover the whole city and further expanded to include a wide variety of activities based on the book’s themes.  Now top that all off with events like “Great Disasters From Woburn’s Past” presented by John McElhiney and An Italian Feast and “Music of the Gaslight Era” at the South End Italian Club and you’ll begin to get an idea of  how to beat the winter blues – Woburn style!

Stephen Puleo’s book Dark Tide:  The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919 is the book selected.  It is an exciting story about the molasses tank that burst sending a wave of molasses through Boston’s North End, causing loss of life and property destruction.  Younger readers have the opportunity to participate by reading Joshua’s Song by Jean Hiatt Harlow.  It is a fictional story of a young boy who becomes a hero by saving lives on the day of the molasses flood.

The Woburn Reads Committee is extending an invitation to all individuals and organizations to read these books and to participate in the many activities we have planned.

Copies of both books are available at the Woburn Public Library to borrow or purchase.

Funds for Woburn Reads were donated to the Friends of the Woburn Public Library in memory of Kathryn Connolly.
