Youth Shoveling Snow for YES Hours

We at SCI Woburn, in partnership with the Woburn Senior Center, have become aware that there are some seniors in our community who are in need of serious shoveling assistance. There are some serious safety issues involved-- e.g. one elderly woman living alone is struggling to keep her gas vent clear. Therefore, SCI is matching youth volunteers with seniors in the community who desperately need snow removal.

SCI is looking for local, Woburn youth interested in receiving community service hours, such as YES, confirmation, scout service, etc, to help meet this need. If an advisor, coach, or parent has students willing to volunteer, they should contact us and give us an idea of how many students they have and when they might be available. We can then assign them to the seniors in most pressing need of help. If they think they might be able to round up some volunteers, they can let us know that even before they have the group totally lined out, so we can get a sense of how many folks we might be able to help.

A few things we'd ask of volunteers:
  • Only go in pairs or groups to help shovel.
  • Children under 16 should be accompanied by a parent
  • Stay outside the home
  • Let us know when volunteers plan to go, and confirm when it is complete (a quick photo of the completed area would be great!).
  • Make sure their parents know where they are going!
  • Please check any heating and/or dryer vents to be sure they are clear of snow, and thus preventing dangerous fumes from getting into the home.
If able to volunteer please contact Karen at krice@socialcapitalinc.org and Brian at bkibler@socialcapitalinc.org. They can also call 781.935.2244.
