Food Uncertainty During the Corona Crisis

Many families rely on the public schools for a daily breakfast and lunch for their children.  With schools closed some are left wondering where they will get their next meal.  We are also being encouraged to avoid the grocery stores as much as possible and restaurants are operating on a take out and delivery basis only.  Even if we are able to get to the stores the shelves are picked over and options are limited.  With all the closures right now our community is also struggling with unempoloyment and other financial strains.  What are we to do?

There are actually many resources right here in Woburn to help families gain access to healthy food! The Woburn Public Schools have a wonderful program providing bagged breakfasts and lunches five days a week with pick up between 8:30am-10:00am and 11:00am-1:00pm.  Anyone is welcome to show up and grab both meals at the same time.  One family member can collect meals for the whole house.  If you know a vulnerable neighbor you can collect their meals for them.

The Dwelling Place Soup Kitchen is still providing meals, though they have switched to a take out method only Mondays/Wednesdays/Saturdays from 5:30-6:00pm.  The Dwelling Place is located inside the Woburn United Methodist Church at 523 Main Street in Woburn.

Council for Social Concern is still serving Woburn and Winchester residents from their food pantry by appointment.  Call Paula Matthews at 781-935-6495 to schedule an appointment in their available hours;

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:45-12:00 and 1:30-3:00 or Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:00.

As always, those who need food assistance when the Food Pantry is closed may come to the agency anytime between 9:15 and 4:45, Monday to Friday, to receive an emergency box of food.

Council of Social Concern is located at 2 Merrimac Street, in Woburn.

Most restaurants in Woburn are still operating on a take out/delivery only basis.  If you are unsure if your favorite restaurant is operating simply give them a call.  Burger King is offering a nationwide promotion if you order online or using their app.  Anyone who orders one adult meal will receive 2 FREE kids meals.  Remember it's drive thru only.

Please stay tuned for updates and changes as this is a rapidly evolving situation in Woburn and throughout the country.
