SCI, in parternship with the YMCA International Learning Center (ILC), is seeking members for the WorldFest 2017 Steering Committee. WorldFest is an annual, multi-cultural festival held each spring in Woburn, MA, to celebrate cultural diversity and solidarity. Members of the committee work in tandem with SCI and the ILC to plan and implement outreach for the event.

#WoburnUnites is a homegrown effort dedicated to making Woburn a welcoming place for ALL by creating programming that fosters community and understanding. It is made up of a coalition of community organizations who all share the vision of a healthier and happier city. Through the coordination of programs and events surrounding the ideas of cultural diversity and acceptance, #WoburnUnites hopes to encourage residents of Woburn to come together and share in our differences.

To start off the new year, there are a couple of events already in the works! These include a podcast discussion group at the Woburn Public LIbrary, as well as an immigrants rights event at the United Methodist Church.

Lutheran Church to host Second Community Forum on Race Relations

The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, in collaboration with SCI, will be hosting the second Community Forum on Race Relations on Thursday, February 9, from 7 - 9pm. This forum follows in the footsteps of the first Community Forum which took place at St. John's Baptist Church this past October. In attendance will be a number of community leaders, including pastor Cindy Jacobsen, and it will feature small group discussions.

The forum is meant to provide a safe space for members of the Woburn community to discuss race relations and cultural diversity. Residents of all ages are encouraged to attend! Please contact with questions. 

SCI AmeriCorps Recruiting for Half-Year Positions

SCI AmeriCorps is currently recruiting applicants for a number of half-year positions which will be starting in January. Some open positions include the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn, the Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham and Wakefield, and Groundwork Lawrence. Applicants to these positions will be asked to serve 900 hours between January - June of 2017.

St. John's Baptist Church Hosts an MLK Luncheon

St. John's Baptist Church

Join St. John's Baptist Church of Woburn this upcoming Monday, January 16, as they celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr.! They will be hosting an MLK luncheon, followed by a program that highlights Dr. King's accomplishments and explores what the future holds for his vision of a united America. 

The luncheon will begin at 11:30am and feature a Southern-style cuisine, including fried chicken, collard greens, and candied yams. At 1:00pm, the program will start with keynote speaker Rev. Arthur Hilson, president of the United Baptist Convention of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. Music and reflections will follow.

Don't miss the Library Renovation Road Show, this Wednesday, January 11 at the Woburn Senior Center. The library admin team will be there to showcase the library's reconstruction project - with virtual tours! Stop by between 11am and 1pm to get a sneak peak at the new Woburn Public Library.

Interfaith and Historic Celebration to honor Woburn's 375th Anniversary

Invitation to the Interfaith and Historic Celebration

Woburn's 375th Anniversary Celebration is set to kick off this week, with an exciting line-up of events throughout the year. The Woburn City Hall released a tentative list of the goings-on that you can expect for 2017. 

On January 8th at 2pm, the first event in celebrating the New Year will be the Interfaith and Historic Celebration to take place at the First Congregational Church. The keynote speaker of the event will be Massachusetts state Senator Ed Markey! Also featured will be a local children's choir led by Lynn Burns, the High School Choir, the Mishawum Choral Society, and a special 375th community choir, led by Brian Gilbertie. There will also be a re-enactment of the ordination of Woburn's first minister, Rev. Thomas Carter, in 1642.
