Community Members Cleaning Up!WREN Visibility Site Cleanup - September 20, 2008

Thank  you  to all the volunteers who helped at WREN's Visibility site clean up and flower bed planting this past Saturday, September 20th on Woburn's Neighborhood Day Weekend.  The visibility site is located off Route 128 , Rt 38 exit, EXIT 35, toward Woburn/Wilmington.

We had a good and productive day. Approximately 40 volunteers helped throughout the day long event. Volunteers worked from 9 AM to 3 PM digging out plants from the old flower beds and leveling off the soil. They then split the Stella D'oro daylilies, removed any visible weeds and sorted the daffodil and grape hyacinth bulbs for replanting. After shaping the new flower bed and making two large W's with the Stella D'oro daylilies the daffodil and hyacinth bulbs were replanted. Any left over plants and bulbs were given to some of the volunteers who took them home to plant in their yards.

The Austin TorpedoesThe Citizens Park Summer Concert Series concludes with its fifth concert on Sunday, September 21st, featuring The Austin Torpedoes. This concert has been rescheduled for Neighborhood Day Weekend from the original August 8th date. The concert will run from 5-7 p.m. in Citizens Park, located on Main Street (Route 38) across from the Common.  This concert is sponsored by Dunkin Donuts Woburn Center.

The Austin Torpedoes are a Boston area band who perform what its members like to call "good ol' American music." Their unique sound combines elements of many American musical styles such as blues, jazz, country, western swing, and rockabilly. In its unique way, the band interprets songs by a wide range of artists including: Duke Ellington, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, the Beatles, and Chuck Berry.

The core members of the band, Nicky Vegas, lead vocals and guitar, Don Barthelemy, drums and percussion, and Gary Secondino, bass guitar, have been playing together for almost twenty years.  The band found its missing ingredient in the guise of Seitu whose Hawaiian steel guitar further defined the band's sound. Audiences all over New England have enjoyed the band's combination of smooth vocals, distinctive steel guitar sound, and swinging rhythms. The Torpedoes unique sound will lift up your spirits and make you move your feet. There's nothing like...The Austin Torpedoes!

The Bedford Big Band

The Citizens Park Summer Concert Series had its third concert last Friday, featuring the Bedford Big Band. This fantastic concert was sponsored by Artisan Music Studios. The week's stormy weather let up just in time for the Friday event, and a large number of residents from Woburn and surrounding communities used this as a great opportunity to have a relaxing evening outdoors.

Audience members were delighted by the band's classic repetoire spanning from the 30's straight up to today. Playing standards from classic big band composers, the 24-piece band from Bedford New Hampshire featured both instrumental renditions of classic vocal pieces as well as the fantastic vocal arrangements. The concert was a real hit!
