Woburn is rising to the challenge when it comes to fighting the childhood obesity epidemic. In February, the Intrepid Keystone Club at the Boys and Girls Club of Woburn won a grant to create a youth-led initiative to educate young people in Woburn about the importance of active, healthy lifestyles, while also creating opportunities for youth to be active in their daily lives. For more on this initiative, click here.

Now, the city is doing its part to promote healthy lifestyles for children. Woburn recently received a wellness grant of $8,700 from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council as part of the Middlesex Community Transformation Grant to promote safe walking for school children.

Woburn will use this grant to work with the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program to look at the walking conditions at five local schools: Altavesta Elementary School, the Goodyear School, the Linscott-Rumford Elementary School, Clyde Reeves Elementary School and Joyce Middle School.

The idea behind this wellness grant is that if the children in the community have safer walking routes to school, healthier and more active lifestyles will be encouraged and there will be less instances of childhood obesity.

The Safe Routes to School program will also help the schools develop educational and promotional tools to encourage walking and biking as healthy transportation options.
