SCI AmeriCorps

The SCI AmeriCorps program supports youth success by increasing volunteerism and providing leadership training and community service opportunities for youth. The goal of the SCI AmeriCorps program is to connect youth with relationships, experiences, and resources they need to succeed. Members implement volunteer outreach and capacity building activities that increase volunteer participation, and provide leadership training and community service opportunities for youth. Since 2007, SCI AmeriCorps members have served at various host sites, who are aligned with the mission of Social Capital Inc. 

Members not only serve with other host sites, but they can serve with SCI as well! SCI is currently looking for a Volunteer Outreach Coordinator (VOC) to serve with SCI Woburn. This member will be under the direction of the SCI Woburn Program Manager. 

Member responsibilities include:

  • Lead ongoing management of the SCI Engaging Volunteers (SERV) network, and lead coordination of annual SCI volunteer initiatives;
  • Lead ongoing coordination of Woburn Parent Network (WPN) program and resource offerings;
  • Participate in the organization and execution of annual SCI-led community events including: Allyship Month, AAPI Month, Black History Month, Juneteenth, and WorldFest;
  • Participate in planning and management of SCI Woburn communications consisting of: sciwoburn.org website management, @sciwoburn social media platforms, and the monthly community e-newsletter. 

Requirements:

  • Able to commit to Full-Time service in local communities with diverse residents 
  • Effective communication skills to conduct community outreach through marketing strategies and civic engagement
  • Strong work ethic, collaboration, and time management skills 
  • Availability to serve in-person for some or all service activities

Woburn Volunteers

Social Capital Inc. is looking for a Volunteer Outreach Coordinator (VOC) to serve the Woburn, MA community through the SCI AmeriCorps program! The SCI AmeriCorps program connects youth with relationships, experiences, and resources they need to succeed. Responsibilities for this position include recruiting and managing local volunteers, coordinating community programming, and communications on all SCI Woburn platforms. The VOC must be available to serve partially in person in Woburn, MA- access to a car recommended.

The coming service year will be a unique challenge, different from all the others. Returning members, Liandra Reyes and Bianca Sciocchetti spoke about Bianca’s experience with remote service and starting the new service year in-person. Bianca is serving at the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn for a second year. Currently the Boys & Girls Club is a Supervised Learning Center, meaning that the youth can go to the Boys & Girls Club for their remote learning on days they aren’t physically in school. Bianca and Liandra discussed what service looked like when the pandemic hit and her excitement now being back in-person.

Plans for the Woburn Parent Network were made early in 2020, and quickly adapted to meet challenges parents face during the pandemic. During our first two presentations we had over 100 parents join us, clearly we were on to something! The WPN kicked off with a very helpful presentation by SCI Board member Jennifer Mahon, about how developing a structured routine can be helpful to families. This was followed by “Teens, Tweens & Quarantines”, presented by Jon Mattleman. The WPN returned to help parents during the return to school with a program from Woburn parent Kristen Herlihy. The Woburn Parent Network is a collaboration between SCI Woburn, Woburn Public Schools and The James L. McKeown Boys and Girls Club. This project is funded through CHNA 15 DoN funds from Lahey Hospital and Medical Center.

SCI AmeriCorps in Action

Social Capital Inc. is looking to fill Volunteer Outreach Coordinator and Youth Leadership Coordinator positions in Woburn through our SCI AmeriCorps program! Our AmeriCorps Service Year has already begun and our AmeriCorps Members perform 1700 hours of service over 10 months through June 2020. SCI AmeriCorps members receive a service stipend and are eligible for health care, student loan forbearance, and other benefits while gaining professional experience. SCI AmeriCorps Members receive an education award upon successful completion of their service. Give back to Woburn!
